MIT turns down-time into learning time

Each year during the winter break, most campuses shut down and become ghost towns. MIT is different. For the students at this Cambridge campus, winter break is known as Independent Activities Period (IAP). For four weeks students, faculty, staff, and alums have a unique opportunity to organize, sponsor, and participate in a wide variety of activities.

During IAP students have the ability to set their own educational agenda, pursue independent projects, meet with faculty, or talk to experts about important future decisions. For example, this year’s list of IAP activities include anything from Ice Dance to Virtual Reality and A Brief History of Kanye to How to Program a Quantum Computer. With over 50 categories and subjects and hundreds of activities to choose from, students can make the most of the down time during winter break.

Interested students can also spend time developing future career skills including Career Values, Resume Building, Effective Presentations, and Networking as they prepare for the next step in their lives. For more information about MIT’s IAP, check out their site.
